Summary

The Operational Programme “ROAD AXES, PORTS AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT” (OP-RAPUD) of the General Secretariat for Public Works of MEPPPW is one of the 11 Sectorial Operational Programmes of the Third Community Support Framework (3d CSF) 2000-2006. It is a national programme implemented in the entire territory of the country. The following information is available in order to provide an overview of the Programme, as it has been approved after its revision on December 2004.

The OP-RAPUD mainly aims at upgrading and extending the Transport System of the Country through the actions proposed. It mainly concerns road and sea transport infrastructure and security, as well as urban transport infrastructure.
 
Furthermore, special attention has been paid to developing the main road infrastructure of the country [Patras-Athens-Thessalonica-Evzoni Motorway, Egnatia Motorway, Western Axis (Ionian Road), Corinthos – Tripoli – Kalamata Highway, Central Greece Highway, Northern Road Axis of Crete]. In addition to that, it also intends in the first place, to upgrade the ports infrastructure, in the second place to put forward various actions for developing the urban transport system, including the Athens and Thessalonica Subway, and lastly, to interconnect the Greek islands.
 
Moreover, the OP includes actions aiming at improving road safety while also managing traffic in the country’s principal motorways and in the most important urban centres. Horizontal actions concerning security and communication in the entire transports field, are also included (referring to the Hellenic Police Force, the Fire Brigade and the Ministry of Mercantile Marine).
