During the Programmed Period 2000 – 2006, mainly road but also port projects in view of transports infrastructure were submitted for funding. These projects were forming an integral part of the Transports Development Strategy of the country and could directly cover the needs of the Transports Sector for the period in question. There is complementarity and synergy between these projects and the projects included in the Operational Programme “Road Axes, Ports and Urban Development”.
The total budget of the projects under the authority of the Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works, which have been approved in accordance with related Decisions made by the European Commission, rises up to 2.258,4 million Euros, whereas 1.305,7 million Euros of the above mentioned sum constitutes the aid deriving from the Cohesion Fund.
This initial planning concerning road and port projects has been annexed to the Operational Programme “Road Axes, Ports and Urban Development”, as it has been approved by the European Union.
The road projects submitted for co-financing by the Cohesion Fund, mainly concern parts of the Trans-European Network and in particular, the following road axes:
1. Patras-Athens-Thessalonica-Evzoni Motorway.
2. Egnatia Motorway
3. Ionian Road (West Road Axis)
4. Highway: Corinthos – Tripoli – Kalamata / Sparta
The ports projects submitted for co-financing by the Cohesion Fund, mainly aim at completing pending interventions of the previous period and in particular, the port of Igoumenitsa.
